A longer zoom lens is the reason most people step up from either a
cell phone camera or an older digicam with a more limited zoom range. Long-zoom
cameras fall into two classes; the "pocket zooms," small cameras with
zoom ratios up to perhaps 15x or so, and the larger "superzooms" with
20x or more zoom. The Nikon P510 definitely qualifies as a Superzoom model.
Building on last year's very successful P500 model, the Nikon P510
takes the whole superzoom concept up another full notch, with
a 42x zoom lens covering an equivalent range of 24 mm all the way to
1,000 mm! To get an idea of what that means, 1,000 mm is roughly
a 20x magnification relative to what you see with your naked eye. At
the other end of its range, the P510 goes wide enough to capture large groups
from close up, most of the room from a corner, or all of a house from just
across the street. Whether you're in cramped quarters or across a ballfield,
the Nikon P510's lens can frame the subject for you. Carrying on what's become
a Nikon tradition, the P510 also has a super-macro mode, focusing down to just
1 cm from the front of the lens.
When it comes to resolution, the Nikon P510's 16.1 megapixel sensor
quite frankly has more resolution than you're ever likely to need, while the
advanced VR (Vibration Reduction) optical image stabilization system helps tame
the ultra-long focal length, minimizing blur from camera shake. Image
stabilization is an absolutely essential feature with a zoom lens this long,
but even with it, you may find it tricky to keep the camera on your subject at
1,000 mm: An inexpensive tripod would be a smart investment, to make the most
of what the P510 is capable of. Like the P500 before it, the Nikon P510's image
sensor is a backside-illuminated type, for improved low-light performance.
The Nikon P510 is great for shooting fast action as well, capturing
up to 5 shots in just about a second: There's no substitute for good reflexes,
but the Nikon P510 will do more to help you capture the critical moment (or a
whole string of them, for that matter), than most cameras in its class. At the
same time, a subject tracking system helps keep the focus locked onto your
subject even when it moves around in the frame. For more sedate settings, the
Smart Portrait System automatically ajusts the camera's processing for
pleasant, soft skin tones in portraits.
One of the nice features of last year's P500 was its beautiful
3" 921,000 dot LCD panel, which continues on the P510. It's also a
Vari-Angle LCD, which means you can tilt it up or down, for shooting over your
head or down low for macro subjects or to get down on your kids' level. (The
secret to great-looking child/baby shots.)
While the Nikon P510 offers full PASM exposure options for ultimate
control over aperture and shutter speed, it also has an easy to use Auto mode,
as well as no less than 20 Scene modes for situations such as sunsets, night
portraits, night scenes, parties, etc. Even Scene modes can be a little
overwhelming at times, though, so the Nikon P510 also offers a Scene Auto
Selector mode that automatically picks the scene mode best suited to the
subject and lighting at hand. A special Panorama mode makes it easy to create
180- and 360-degree panoramas, to take in the big picture.
HD movie recording is almost mandatory in digicams these days, and
the Nikon P510 comes well-schooled in that area, able to record true 1080p HD
movies, and play them back directly to your TV via a built-in HDMI port.
Travelers will appreciate the Nikon P510's built-in GPS capability
that lets you optionally tag each photo or movie with location coordinates
showing where it was shot. These geo-tags integrate with the provided Nikon
View NX2 software and Google Earth, so you can string your photos together into
a detailed record of where you went and what you saw.
As a superzoom model, the Nikon P510 is a comfortable handful, as
opposed to something you could drop in your pocket. With dimensions of 4.8 x
3.3 x 4.1 inches (119.8 x 82.9 x102.2 mm) and a weight of 1lb 3.6 oz (555g),
it's pretty typical of cameras in its category. (If you're looking for
